Food Chains

This week in science we will be learning about food chains.  What food chains can you find out about?  Write a paragraph about what happens in that food chain.  Try to include the following scientific vocabulary- herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, producer and consumer.

15 comments:

  1. The carrot is a producer eaten by a rabbit so a rabbit is a herbivore.The rabbit is eaten by a fox witch makes it a carnivore and the fox is eaten by a lion so the lion is also also a carnivore

  2. A food chain tells you how each living thing gets food, for example ants eat lettuce and the owls eat the ants.You can label animals by calling them Herbivores, Carnivores and Omnivores.

  3. Africa has 54 countries one of them is my best one and it is called Egypt.My best animal from Africa is an elephant.Africa is the 4 biggest continent in the world.In Africa it is very hot.In Africa there is 3 deserts.In Africa there is a big waterfall called Tugela Fall. MICHAL!

  4. Grass is eaten by goat and the goat is eaten by human. The grass produces energy using three things: sun, rain and nutrients in the soil. The goat gets energy from grass because the grass got energy from sun and rain. The humans get energy from eating the goat.
    In the above food chain, the plant is the producer and the goat and human are the consumer. The goat is an herbivore animal and human is an omnivore.

  5. A plant is a producer because it makes it's own food. A plant is eaten by a butterfly, the butterfly is a herbivore. A herbivore is an animal that feeds on plants. The butterfly is eaten by a bird, the bird is an omnivore. An omnivore is an animal that feeds on plants and other animals. The bird is eaten by a cat, the cat is a carnivore. A carnivore is an animal that feeds on other animals. Animals are called consumers because they eat plants and other animals. They don't make their own food. Molly from Great Fire class

  6. A food chain starts with a plant. The plant is eaten by a snail(herbivore - a plant eater). Next the snail is eaten by a small bird (omnivore because it can eat berries off plants and small insects) and then the small bird is eaten by an eagle.(Carnivore - a meat eater).
    The plant is the producer because it does not eat anything, it gets it's energy from the sun. All the others are consumers because they eat each other.

    Carrots make food from the sunlight and rain. Then carrots are eaten by rabbits. After rabbits are eaten by foxes. In this food chain carrots are the producers, rabbits are the herbivores and foxes are the carnivores.

  9. I have a food chain in my garden. In my garden there are plants and grass which are producers. Producers get energy from sunlight and water. Slugs in my garden eat the grass and they are called consumers. Birds come and eats the slugs.
    Rabbits, Cow and sheeps are Herbivore because they just eat grass and plants.
    Carnivores like Foxes and Owls hunt for small animals and they just it meat.
    Humans like me eat plants and meat and they are called omnivores.

  10. The food chain is the transfer of energy from one species to another. All living things needs energy to grow. some living things create the energy (producers) and some use the energy (consumers). A food chain usually begins with a plant (which gets its energy from sunlight and nutrients from the soil). The food chain that I have found about is Plants (Producers of leaves, fruits and vegetables) eaten by Worms and Worms are eaten by the Chickens and the Chicken is eaten by the Humans (Consumers).

    SUN --> PLANT --> WORMS --> CHICKEN --> HUMANS

    Worm is Omnivore
    Chicken is Omnivore
    Humans are Omnivore

    The omnivores eat both meat and plants.

  11. The food chain: This food chain is starting by a plant consuming the solar energy(sunlight) from the sun. Then the grasshopper has consumed that plant and then the frog has eaten the grasshopper and then towards the end when a hungry bird comes along and eats up the frog. Definition of the words: A herbivore is a living thing that only eats vegetables and fruits. A carnivore means a living thing that only eats meat. An omnivore means that something eats vegetables, fruits and meat. A producer means a living thing that needs sunlight to grow. A consumer is something that is absorbing something and taking something.

  12. The sun gives the plant food then the plant gives the grasshopper food then the grasshopper gives the frog food then the frog gives the bird.

  13. A food chain describes how different organisms eat each other, starting out with a plant and ending with an animal. For example, grass ---> zebra ---> lion
    Animals get energy and nutrients by eating other animals or plants.
    For example: caterpillars eat leaves,mice eat caterpillars then owls eat mice. Rihanna from Deadly Plague

  14. Well done you have found some interesting food chains. I am pleased to see you are using the scientific vocabulary we have talked about in class.

  15. All living things including plants, animals and humans need energy to live. They get their energy from food. Plants produce food using sunlight, air and water. animals and humans don't produce food on their own so they have to depend on animals and plants to survive.

    Algae -> small fish -> bigger fish-> sea lion-> shark

    Grass-> zebra -> cheetah

    Spiders-> ants -> anteater
